ARCHITECT OF INFLUENCE.
Before she became a professor, global speaker, or respected force in music education, Jasmine “Jazz” Young, MBA was a girl in Queens with headphones on, soaking in soul music and dreaming big. Her love for music started early—and never left.
At 15, she managed her first artist—a popular DJ from Queens named DJ Johnny Wishbone. While at Howard University, she landed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to intern at Def Jam Records, which was a prominent independent label at the time. She contributed to projects for LL Cool J and the iconic trio Run-DMC. Immediately after graduating in the spring of 1994, she was offered a full-time job at Def Jam by Lyor Cohen, who now serves as President of YouTube.
Jazz rose quickly—first as Promotions Coordinator, then as one of the label’s first-ever Product Managers. She found her niche overseeing campaigns for Jay-Z, DMX, Foxy Brown, Erick Sermon, and Onyx, while also managing joint ventures like Roc-A-Fella and Ruff Ryders. She later became General Manager of DMX’s debut joint venture, Bloodline Records.
After a successful run in music, Jasmine transitioned into executive roles—serving as VP of Marketing & Operations at The Source and consulting for the Ascena Corporation. She earned her MBA from Felician University and brought nearly 30 years of industry and leadership experience into higher education, teaching at the Institute of Audio Research and Metropolitan College of New York. She also served as Administrator for Monroe College’s School of Business and Accounting for a decade, where she taught from a practical perspective and cultivated a thriving community of driven, inspired students.
THE STORY BEHIND THE IMPACT
Today, she serves back home at her alma mater, Howard University, where she was tapped by Warner Music executive Julian Petty in 2022 to launch and lead the Warner Music/Blavatnik Center for Music Business. Within months, the program was named one of Billboard’s Top Music Business Schools—an honor it’s held for three years running.
In 2023, Jasmine created the West African Music and Arts Festival (WAMA Fest) in Ghana—a celebration of West Africa’s cultural richness through music, art, and conversation. Produced in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority and Warner Music Africa, the festival bridges global Black creatives and industry leaders through culture and community.
Jasmine has spoken to global corporate teams at Ross Stores and Michelle Kang’s Cognosante, and has been recognized by Billboard and the Mayor of Washington D.C. as Educator of the Year for her contributions to music, culture, and education. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated—and finds her greatest joy in being a mother to two incredible sons.
Whether mentoring students or shifting the energy of a room, Jasmine leads with vision, heart, and purpose. Her mission? To elevate education, move culture forward, and inspire impact—one story at a time.
“I didn’t wait for a seat at the table—I brought my own table and turned it into a classroom.”
